The Art ConversationsSpring, 2022
Not only can art be a comforting source of solace, but it can also serve as an invigorating reminder that perspective can make a world of difference. Each season, I like to take a little time to reflect on the stories that have brought me to where I am and the artworks they have inspired. It is in recognizing and reclaiming the worth of these moments that I appreciate my journey over time. I find art to be both deeply personal and also a gift worth sharing. Within my Art Conversations, please enjoy my tales and motivations, as well as a bit about what inspired my choice and process of creative expression. |
"Defy"
acrylic on canvas board, 2013 ABOUT THE STORY Nothing stops this woman! A little rain? Nah. Losing her umbrella's shelter? No worries-- she is *fabulous* regardless, and can take care of herself! Her poised, elegant stride shows that she defies all odds...sparkling in the rain as she continues on. ABOUT THE PROCESS Like most of my pieces, this painting employs deep ambient layers to set the background mood. Standing out against the dreary rainstorm colors, the red umbrella pops, and the woman's skin and garments glow, undaunted. As a fun extra emphasis, thick dollops of tinted gloss create a raised texture that draws you into the scene. |
"Beside the Still Waters"
acrylic on canvas board, 2017 ABOUT THE STORY
One of my favorite passages is the 23rd Psalm. If you also know and appreciate the verse, the imagery of these two related pieces may strike a familiar note. In "Beside the Still Waters", the Spirit leads the viewer through a peaceful, idyllic waterscape prepared for them to restore their soul. "Yea Though I Walk", reminds the viewer that though they may walk (or feel like they are walking)"through the valley of the shadow of death," they are not alone and need not fear. "Yea Though I Walk"
acrylic on canvas board, 2015 Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures He leadeth me beside the still waters He restoreth my soul He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil For thou art with me-- thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies Thou anointest my head with oil My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. - The Bible ABOUT THE PROCESS
It was important for me to portray the Spirit as a graceful and powerful figure. Though not entirely corporeal, the figures are meant to still be relatable and comforting. To suggest a strong leader, the head is prominent and crisply defined. The figures' swift and powerful movements are shown in the upswing of the their cape-like fronds and feathers. The figures in both paintings tout bold and muscular physiques, particularly to symbolize the Spirit's strength and nurturing protection, but also to convey a familiar touch of humanity. |
"Sweeter Grapes"
acrylic on canvas board, 2012 ABOUT THE STORY
As a child, I was always intrigued by the story of The Fox and the Grapes. I often wondered what would have happened if the fox had persevered... ABOUT THE PROCESS The broad, sweeping strokes and progressive lighting of this piece convey the bold and hopeful spirit of the subject and her climb. The soft, translucent layers painted into her dress, skin, and hair contrast with her heavily plated armor, symbolizing both the strength and the vulnerability of this lovely warrior. There are multiple ways to interpret these contrasting traits. "Long Distance"
acrylic on canvas board, 2009 ABOUT THE STORY
In this wistfully romantic scene, the robust green tree and its delicately blossoming companion long for each other, daring to attempt a fleeting moment of connection. Rooted in their own places, they can enjoy only an achingly brief moment of embrace, before they are pulled apart again at the whims of the evening breeze. ABOUT THE PROCESS This painting is on the smaller side. At only 8" x 8", it serves as an intimate glance into this private moment. The stippling of its classic spring colors captures the depth and fleshy tenderness of the full blooms. Its gentler strokes create wispy clouds, softly tinged by the glow of the crisp rising moon. Spring romance is painted into every inch. |
"Sanctuary"

ABOUT THE STORY
I can just feel the mystical comfort of this moment every time I view this painting. I am amidst the sunrays peeking through a fluttering green canopy , I hear the rustling breeze, feel and smell the fragrant textures of the forest around me. Within this mindful moment is a treasured sanctuary.
I made this painting for a dear soul who has since passed on. With wild eyes, a full mane, and a flashing smile, he would tell his stories of art and fire, struggle and structure, defiance and love. I made the piece "Sanctuary" as a gift to help soothe his turbulent soul, but sadly, I never got to give it to him. I'd like to believe that his spirit has found that sanctuary nevertheless... and ever so often, when sunbeams peek over my shoulder, I wonder if just maybe he is there.
ABOUT THE PROCESS
There are many layers of depth to this painting, literally and metaphorically. From the dreamy, misty background-- to the staccato stippling of sun-dappled leaves-- to the lush, verdant foreground, the entire scene is cocooned by glowing streaks of angelic light. Each aspect of the painting comes together in cohesive harmony to create the peaceful sacred space.
